Remains of deceased Ekurhuleni MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, was repatriated to South Africa on Friday. 

Mngwevu died with three others in Chokwe, Mozambique, when floodwaters swept away their vehicle.

The City of Ekurhuleni announced his death on Wednesday, this week.

Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, Gauteng MEC of Health, wrote on social media platforms on Friday “today we are paying homage to the family of Cde Andile Mngwevu. He was indeed a person of integrity, always putting service before self. His energy, wisdom, and compassion left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We will forever honor his life, his tireless work, and the lasting difference he made in our communities.”

About 106 people have died in Mozambique’s floods and over 93,000 families displaced.

This amounts to close to 400,000 homeless people, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.

An estimated 100,000 people are housed in 100 temporary accommodation centres, schools and public buildings.

Severely affected areas are Gaza, Maputo, Inhambane and Sofala.
