About 300 cases of malaria were reported in Mpumalanga, in January 2026.

The Department of Health said areas most affected, are the Ehlanzeni District’s Nkomazi, City of Mbombela, and Bushbuckridge local municipalities.

The rise in cases, is attributed to recent flooding in the province.

As a result, the Department of Health urges residents in affected areas, to take precaution, such as using mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying, and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms like fever, headaches, or chills.

Sasekani Janet Manzini, MEC of health in Mpumalanga, said “standing water from recent floods, creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

She also encouraged residents and visitors to get tested immediately, when feeling ill.
