About 5 suspects, aged between 32 and 65, were arrested by the Welkom K9 Unit and private security, on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, in a vehicle transporting suspected stolen copper.
Sergeant Palesa Thabana, said in a statement, investigations revealed that occupants of a cream Toyota Corolla, attempted to sell copper cables to a local scrap yard but failed.
“Information was operationalized. The vehicle was traced and stopped after the driver attempted to flee from the scene at the Welkom Industrial area. Permission to search the vehicle was requested and granted” she said.
That is when the police discovered 50 kilograms of bags containing copper cables.
Suspects are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
