President Ramaphosa has sacked Dr Dion George, as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF), confirming rumours over the weekend, that Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), formally requested this action.
Vincent Magwenya, the President’s Spokesperson, confirmed a cabinet reshuffle, as a result.
“In accordance with section 91(3)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the President appointed Willem Abraham Stephanus Aucamp, as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment.”
John Steenhuizen, DA Leader, did not give reasons for his requests, except confirmation that he was behind George’s dismissal.
“I formally requested that the President implement the following changes to the DA’s representatives in the National Executive: Willie Aucamp MP to succeed Dr Dion George MP as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and Ms Alexandra Abrahams MP to fill the vacant position of Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.”
Regarding rumours he acted in favour of illicit wildlife traffickers, pressuring the DA, he said “ I wish to set the record straight in this regard, not least given the reportage that seeks to make out that his removal is due to external pressure and interests.”
Various environmental organisations including SAFCEI have been vocal about this controversial decision.
