Search and rescue efforts continue to find twenty-six (26) missing people, at Binaliw Landfill, Cebu City, in the Phillipines.

The Cebu City Police Office confirmed four victims were found dead, while nine (9) people were retrieved injured.

A landslide entrapped workers at around 4:23 PM local time on Thursday, at the Prime Waste Solution Landfill in Sitio Kainsikan, Barangay Binaliw.

Multiple organisations are part of rescue efforts, including the police, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, emergency medical teams, barangay responders, and volunteer groups.

George V Ylanan, Police Officer-in-Charge, in the City, said “our priority at this time is the safety and rescue of those who are still missing. All available PNP units, together with our partner agencies, are working continuously and exerting maximum effort to locate and assist the victims. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and assure the public that we will not stop until all missing persons are accounted for.”

Although the incident just occurred suddenly, City Councillor of the area, Joel Garganera, believes poor waste management practices might have led to the dangerous collapse of the Binaliw Landfill site.
