An explosion at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant, on Tuesday, led to water supply disruptions.

But Rand Water said partial operations were later restored at its Engine Room 4, returning pumping capacity of about 75%.

This has led to a disruption of water supply to four big reservoirs, which supply three of Gauteng’s biggest Metros, including Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

The reservoirs are Palmiet, Eikenhof, Mapleton and Zwartkopjes.

Rand Water said of the 1,800 megalitres per day lost yesterday, about 1,400 were recovered.

Palmiet booster pumping station supplies Johannesburg Water’s systems (including Randburg, Sandton, Illovo, Marlboro, Linbro Park, and South Hills) and various high-lying areas in the City of Tshwane, such as Pretoria East, Pretoria North, and surrounding township.

The Eikenhof reservoir supplies Soweto,  Randburg, Roodepoort, the Commando System, Central Johannesburg, Lenasia and Durban Deep.

The Mapleton system supplies eastern Tshwane parts of Ekurhuleni and various Mpumalanga municipalities.

Zwartkopjes supplies the Johannesburg inner city, southern suburbs, and surrounding areas, as well as parts of the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
