Parts of the Nyl River are contaminated with sewage.

The Technical Division of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality, confirmed the pollution on Thursday.

The Municipality said in a letter to residents “contamination originates from overflowing sewer manholes located near Limpopo and Joe Slovo Bridge and is impacting areas downstream.”

As a result, the Municipality is disallowing extracting water from the Nyl River, or any contact with it, such as swimming or bathing in the river, fishing or engaging in any recreational water activities and letting livestock drink.

The Municipality also said these restrictions are necessary to prevent serious health risks.

The Nyl River is an upper tributary of the Mogalakwena River.

It flows through the northern Springbok Flats near the towns of Mookgophong (formerly Naboomspruit) and Mokopane, often creating the large, seasonally flooded Nylsvley wetlands.
