One learner from uMsinga has been missing, since Saturday afternoon.
He was among 18 learners who were caught in difficulty while swimming at New Beach on Saturday afternoon.
Off-duty lifeguards from Wedge Beach assisted in rescuing the group.
Cyril Xaba, the Mayor of eThekwini, used this incident, to caution members of the public against swimming at non-bathing beaches.
The City said search and rescue operations were activated at 08am on Sunday morning, involving Metro Police, SAPS, a Transnet helicopter, and the National Sea Rescue Institute.
Xaba also urged parents and guardians to ensure that children are under constant adult supervision, when visiting the beach.
