There have been a total of 11 cases -nine confirmed, and two probable cases of the Hantavirus, recorded from the 2 May 2026 to 25 May 2026.

This figure includes three deaths.

The cases involved multiple nationalities and included passengers evacuated to South Africa, Europe, Canada and other countries for clinical management and monitoring. 

The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) said contact tracing and monitoring are underway in South Africa and other countries. 

The Institute also confirmed that there were no secondary laboratory-confirmed cases in South Africa. 

Health officials around the world continue to monitor the hantavirus outbreak linked to a Dutch cruise ship, last month.

The  Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said five days ago, it is monitoring 41 people from the ship, including 18 Americans and 7 passengers who left the ship before the outbreak was declared.
