Residents spotted a lion on the loose, between Pongola and Nongoma on the R66, next to the Vryheid Cross.
They then contacted authorities who confirmed the lion did not escape from any Ezemvelo Wildlife reserves, but might have come from neighbouring private game reserves.
Authorities warned motorists and locals to exercise extreme caution around the area.
