City Power seized over a ton of aluminium cables, during an operation to remove illegal connections and enforce compliance across targeted areas, on Friday.
About a thousand ABC cables were found at Main Street in Jeppestown, Fleurhof Hostel in the informal settlement, Garden Street in Turffontein and other inner City buildings.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said teams also removed unauthorised connections at a multi-purpose building housing residents and businesses.
Their infrastructure was removed because the owner reconnected electricity.
Mangena said electricity crimes are especially severe in winter months, when higher demand for heating pushes the already compromised network to its limits, resulting in prolonged disruptions that affect paying customers the most.
