A fire at Jika Joe Informal Settlement, near Willowton, destroyed 427 informal homes on Sunday evening.
The Msunduzi Municipality said the cause of the fire is under an investigation.
The Municipality also said its fire rescue teams contained the blaze.
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC of Cooperative Governance (CoGTA) in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) said he deployed disaster management teams on Monday morning, to coordinate urgent, comprehensive interim relief.
“As teams remain on the ground, KZN CoGTA urges all communities to exercise extreme caution with open flames this winter” said Buthelezi.
