There are now 18 confirmed and one probable case, of Monkeypox or mpox in South Africa.
The Department of Health confirmed the disease is transmitted mainly through close physical contact with an infected person, including skin-to-skin contact with the rash or lesions, and contact with contaminated materials such as bedding, clothing, or towels used by an infected person.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant.
Foster Mohale, Departmental Spokesperson said there was a rapid increase in laboratory-confirmed mpox cases in the past few weeks.
About fifteen (15) of the cases are in the Western Cape, around Cape Town, three (3) are in Gauteng and one (1) was recorded in KwaZulu Natal.
