Exxaro announced the completion and handover of rehabilitated internal roads and stormwater management systems to the Emakhazeni Local Municipality, on Thursday.
The roads are close to Exxaro’s Belfast Coal Mine in Mpumalanga.
Sizwe Moruku, Acting General Manager at Belfast Coal, said this effort is part of the company’s multi-phase road rehabilitation initiative.
Phase 1 was completed in 2023.
“Infrastructural development remains a cornerstone of economic growth and improved quality of life. Through this project, we are not only improving local roads but also enabling communities to access opportunities that support long-term empowerment and sustainability” said Moruku.
The company’s investment stands at around R26 million, with the completion of Phase 2- on Duggen and Macdonald Streets.
This latest project included upgraded stormwater drainage systems, new pedestrian sidewalks, parking bays, road signage, and surface improvements.
