A freight truck operator received a hefty fine of about R800 000, on the South Coast Road and Solomon Mhlangu Drive, on Wednesday.

He was stopped recently during a routine freight compliance blitz by eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) in collaboration with Metro Police, Fire Services, the Road Traffic Inspectorate and the Border Management Authority. 

Authorities also uncovered a fraudulent Dangerous Goods Permits.

As a result, a woman was arrested for her alleged involvement in producing fake documentation. 

Counterfeit regulatory stamps and altered permits were also confiscated during the operation.

Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association sent a stern warning to those transporting hazardous materials without proper certification, posing serious risks.

He also urged operators to ensure compliance.

Ravina Sewlall, ETA Road Safety Senior Manager, said fines issued during the Transport Week campaign, went up to R5 000, for failure to display a dangerous goods certificate.
