Gauteng municipalities generated R123.3 billion in operational revenue, in the first half of the financial year.
Lebogang Maile, MEC for Finance and Economic Development, said metropolitan municipalities are the main contributors- the City of Johannesburg (R48.5bn), City of Ekurhuleni (R34.5bn) and City of Tshwane (R27.6bn).
Operating expenditure amounted to R109.2 billion (49.2% of the annual budget), largely driven by metros.
The municipal collection rate exceeded the 95% benchmark set out in the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) Circular 71, in December 2025.
