Government  is calling for calm as residents in Westbury and Coronationville, vow to protest further, due to ongoing water supply interruptions.

Johannesburg Water (JW) said current hiccups, were caused by Rand Water redirecting supply between systems.

In addition, the Commando system has old infrastructure, losing water along the way.

About 26% of water is lost through leaks and bursts.

Yesterday, the water utility met with ward councillors, from wards 58, 69, 86 and 87, to discuss immediate and long-term measures to stabilise supply, such as the construction of the new Brixton reservoir and tower, to be completed at the end of October 2025.

On Thursday afternoon, Dada Morero, the Mayor of Joburg and Jack Sekwaila, MMC of Environment, are expected to brief media about next steps, in the crisis, as more suburbs in the south of Joburg, have little to no water.

Rand Water said municipalities in Gauteng are guzzling down 80% of water it abstracts.

The City of Johannesburg, has shows an upward trend and is way above the target licensed quota, putting the system at risk.
