A fire left hundreds of residents displaced in Dunoon’s Site 5, after some 120 structures went up in smokes.
Authorities said in addition to strong southeasterly winds which fanned the blaze, community members were up in arms, and assaulted some firefighters.
Jermaine Carelse, Spokesperson of the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, said about 12 fire engines and water tankers were deployed to the area.
Firefighting helicopters could not take off, due to strong winds.
“One firefighter was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment after suffering heat exhaustion,” said Carelse.
Two women, from a shelter, were reportedly ill.
Emergency services and humanitarian organizations, including Gift of the Givers, are providing relief efforts, such as food, blankets, and toiletries.
The cause of the fire is under scrutiny.
