The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) said on Tuesday, the lion which escaped mysteriously during translocation, on Monday, was recaptured by authorities.
Jerrimiah Matebese could not say much about the incident, or share a picture of the captured animal, or divulge the location of its recapture.
But he says the matter is under investigation.
The lion was being translocated from the Free State Province to Nietverdiend in Ramotshere Moiloa, when it snuck out.
Matebese said the animal was being moved from one private nature reserve, to another.
Part of the investigation, will determine if permits for such a project, were obtained.
“Furthermore, the Department will verify compliance with Condition 5 of the permit, which requires the holder to have public liability insurance and be accountable for any damages caused by escaped animals. Severe action will be taken against the permit holder if found to have violated the permit conditions.”
He also said there is no need to panic.
