The construction at the Senqu Bridge, in Lesotho, is nearly completed.

Both Ministers -Mohlomi Moleko (Natural Resources in Lesotho) and Pemmy Majodina (South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation) were part of a two-day oversight visit to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) from 14 to 15 December 2025.

Tente Tente, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), said there is also significant progress on the 38 km Polihali Transfer Tunnel.

Some 14,000 job opportunities are expected to be created by the project- skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled categories.

This includes livelihoods restoration initiatives and environmental stewardship measures.

Also on site, were the Deputy Minister in the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, senior government officials, members of the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) Board and its Chief Executive Officer, as well as representatives of the Rand Water Board, the largest consumer of LHWP water.

It also emerged  on the second day of the tour, on Monday, that both governments are exploring mechanisms to enable water access for communities near project dams and South Africa’s Free State Province.

Majodini said Rand Water and Gauteng municipalities are to prepare infrastructure for increased water supply from Phase II of the LHWP.
