A rare Blue-tailed Sandveld Lizard, was spotted by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and its partners, in Banhine National Park, Southern Mozambique, in December 2025, after a 50-year absence in the wild.
EWT said the lizard was last seen in the 1970s.
Researchers now think it is expanding its territory to Zinave National Park.
This was confirmed by the rapid biodiversity surveys led by EWT, in partnership with ANAC, the Maputo Natural History Museum, Peace Parks Foundation, and the Restoring African Rangelands Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada.
