Raw sewage is flowing to the Kleinmond Harbour, contaminating seawater.

The Overstrand Municipality confirmed the incident in a formal statement released on Wednesday evening.

Dean O’Neill, Overstrand Municipal Manager, said the spill was caused by a major sewerage pipe burst, near the Kleinmond Sports Field.

There are concerns about the incident’s consequences to public health and the environment, considering that in addition, there is a polluted open channel running from the Main Road to the harbour.

O’Neill said officials are on site, working to contain the spill and repair the damage, but urged parents to ensure that children do not play in or near the unsafe water.

“Juno trucks have been dispatched to the pump station near the tennis courts to help prevent overflow into the estuary.
Once the burst pipe has been repaired, municipal workers will apply enzymes to treat and break down the remaining contaminants” said O’Neill.
