Three new sinkholes developed in just a week, following heavy rains along the R500 outside Carletonville, West of Johannesburg.
The sinkholes are located a kilometre away from the Rooipoort Primary School, between Carletonville and Ventersdorp.
Amy Steyn of the Freedom Front Plus Party in Mogale City, said the Merafong local municipality (Carletonville, Fochville, Wedela) has already partially closed the road.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, such as the N14, to reach Carletonville.
“The area around the R500 is known for its dolomitic territory and the shape of more sinkholes cannot be excluded” said Steyn.
Merafong and Khutsong already have more than 209 sinkholes, which have damaged homes, led to a closure of a daycare centre and a school.
