A fire in Shaka’s Head, part of the KwaDukuza Local Municipality, claimed the lives of five young lives.

They are Asamkele Somtsewu (19), Solulele Somtsewu (1), Sokhula Somtsewu (1), Sivuyile Noyila (14), and Amila Menemene (3).

During his visit to grieving families, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC of Cooperative Governance and traditional affairs in KwaZulu Natal, said he directed practical measures be implemented to support them, such as provincial burial assistance and the installation of life saving smoke detectors as part of early warning interventions.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Two other families- Cibane and Dlamini, also lost three people in another fire, in Nongoloza, part of the Umndoni Local Municipality.

The deceased are Sanele Cibane (37), Lungelo Cibane (30) and Zamokuhle Dlamini (33).

Buthelezi said “the pain these families are enduring is immeasurable. We are providing burial support and logistical assistance now, while strengthening preventative measures. Our message to communities is that government cares and will be present—from the immediate response to the long term solutions that keep families safe.”
