Johannesburg Water (JW), in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand (UJ), announced efforts to supply water to informal settlements in the Deep South Region (Region D), from a borehole.

This project will be the first of its kind to improve water supply, to informal settlements in the City of Johannesburg.

JW said it is starting in an area with a high volume of informal settlements and illegal water connections, which have put a strain on the Deep South systems.

There, demand exceeds supply/capacity by far.

Areas include Doornkop/Thulani, Ebumnandini, Protea South, Chris Hani, Slovo Park and Freedom Square.
