The Cedeberg fire that has burnt over 54,000 hectares of veld, is completely contained.
Reports indicate the fire was started when an SUV pulling a camping trailer, caught fire near the Uitkyk Pass.
Severe winds fuelled flames, which led to a 12 day battle to extinguish the fire.
Franquin Petersen, Director: Community Services & Public Safety, Cederberg Municipality, said “this veldfire or wildland fire tested our people, our systems, and our partnerships. Through disciplined coordination, strong inter-agency cooperation, and the extraordinary courage of our firefighters and partners operating under extreme conditions, we were able to protect lives, property, and critical areas.”
He also said monitoring of the area continues.
Firefighters came from the West Coast District Municipality, CapeNature, private farmers, the Cederberg Municipality, volunteers and private landowners.
“As we transition into the next phase, firefighting teams will remain stationed at Boskloof to conduct active monitoring and patrols for any potential flare-ups, ensuring the continued safety of surrounding communities and critical infrastructure” said Petersen.
