The George Municipality is the latest organisation to urge the national state energy regulator (NERSA), to reverse the recently approved 5% electricity tariff increase for Municipalities.
Browen Johnson, Mayor of George wrote an open letter to NERSA, saying “Eskom is now in a better position and is generating profits again. With this in mind, it makes no sense, that the public is being asked once again, and unfairly so, to absorb Eskom hikes of up to 10,5% in the next two years.”
Johnson also called for a transparent public participation process regarding the matter.
Other organisations that expressed dissatisfaction at the regulator’s decision, are the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) and Project 90 by 2030 (including the Green Connection, the Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute (SAFCEI) and the African Climate Alliance).
Political parties that have opposed include AfriForum and the Democratic Alliance.
