Several analysts have made news on social media claiming Al could kill humans by 2030.
Researchers Jacob Coxon (ex-employee of OpenAI and Anthropic, resigned and warned social media users that some companies have prioritised self-improving superintelligence and are “gambling with our lives.”
Another, Evan Hubinger, of Anthropic, said there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could wipe out all humans within a decade.
This is at the same time as the 8th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Ministerial Roundtable in Seoul, encouraging pressing into Al for Africa’s investment.
Dr Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank Group, met with Han Seong-sook, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, at a surprise sideline event of the 8th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Ministerial Conference (KOAFEC).
A day earlier, he held talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Koo Yun-cheol.
Both discussions centred on artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, investment and innovation — key drivers of Africa’s transformation.
By 2030, Africa will have 1.7 billion people, seventy per cent (70%) of them under thirty.
Yet Africa has a fifth of the world’s people and less than one per cent of the world’s data centres.
“That gap will not be closed by assistance alone. It closes when partners come and build with us” says Dr Ould Tah.
He also said “the partnership between Africa and the Republic of Korea offers an ideal platform to accelerate this transformation. Together, we can move digital projects from the stage of ideas to the stage of investment and implementation, in the service of shared prosperity.”
