Officials impounded a hijacked building in the Joburg city centre, on Christmas Eve, for selling rotten meat.

Patrick Jaca, said a partnership among emergency services EMS, JMPD, SPCA and EHP, was enforcing regulations by holding non-compliant businesses accountable for inadequate waste management and violations of bylaws.

“Businesses identified as being in breach have been issued fines and will be prohibited from operating until all issues are fully addressed and compliance is achieved” said Jaca.

Officials also found illegal chicken farms in one of the buildings.

Chicken owners were informed that the law allows a maximum of 10 chickens.

They also stumbled upon an unauthorised abattoir, where cow heads were chopped off and meat sold.

Dada Morero, Joburg’s Mayor, took to social media to also share news of routine inspections at buildings on Lilian Ngoyi Street.

“One of the buildings failed to meet safety standards. The building was found to violate several bylaws, lacking bathrooms and waste disposal facilities. Environmental Health Inspectors were quickly called in and the building was immediately shut down” he said.
