Environmental champions were honoured by the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), on Thursday.
JCPZ said it will use Women’s Day, to honour people who protect, restore and revitalise Johannesburg’s parks, nature reserves and public green spaces.
Bafikile Mkhize, is one of the heroines.
The JCPZ chose to honour her for her tireless work at eKhaya Park, at the heart of Hillbrow, where she is a shining example of community stewardship.
Through her partnership with local children, soccer clubs and a local security company, she has helped retain the integrity of the park while fostering a culture of ownership, responsibility and pride in one of Johannesburg’s most densely populated communities.
Fran Haslam of Zoo Lake, is also being honoured for her dedication in helping to preserve one of Johannesburg’s most iconic recreational spaces.
Shirley Tebbutt of Delta Park, whose years of passionate environmental advocacy inspired residents to become active custodians of their local green spaces.
Karien Spottiswoode, has worked tirelessly at stewardship at Kloofendal Nature Reserve.
While Mam Yumna, also gave time, energy and heart to protect the City’s environmental heritage.
Thanduxolo Mendrew, Managing Director of the JCPZ, said “these women remind us that parks are not simply maintained through budgets and infrastructure alone—they flourish because of passionate people who care deeply about their communities. Their efforts demonstrate that environmental stewardship begins with ordinary citizens making extraordinary contributions.”
