A new MEC and head of Department for Health, were sworn in over the weekend, in the Northern Cape.

Nontobeko Vilakazi, is the new MEC and Oupa Phiri, the Acting Head of Department.

The Northern Cape Provincial Government took the platform presented by the swearing in, to divulge a Ten-Point Turnaround Action Plan for the health sector. 

This plan has a focus on leadership stability, devolution of delegation to District Health Services, addressing inadequate human resources, aging infrastructure, poor records management, improving  ICT connectivity, ensuring availability of medical equipment and supplies, ensuring availability of pharmaceutical supplies, ensuring safety and security, improving governance matters and audit outcomes, as well as the introduction of drastic measures of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Dr Zamani Saul, the Premier of the Northern Cape, is expected to announce his list of a minimum of 20 visits per month to over 170 health facilities across the province. 

The Department also said he plans to monitor the plan on a monthly basis.
