The 22-year-old scholar transport driver, Ayanda Dludla, appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, where he abandoned his bail application.

Dludla allegedly crashed into an oncoming truck, on the Golden Highway, on Monday, killing 14 learners.

Two other learners and the driver of the truck, sustained injuries.

Lumka Mahanjana, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson for Gauteng, said Dlula faces charges of 14 counts of murder, three of attempted murder, as well as operating a motor vehicle without a certificate of fitness, driving without a professional driving permit, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle.

“In court, the accused elected not to be released on bail. The matter was postponed to 05 March 2026 for further investigations.”
