Police have deployed nyalas (police vehicles) and additional officers to Sporong informal settlement, in Randfontein.

This is one of the measured to secure the displaced community, who fled their homes last month, in fear of intimidation, from Zama Zamas (illegal miners).

It emerged on Wednesday, that the police (SAPS) and nyalas will now be deployed on a permanent basis.

Firoz Cachalia, the Minister of Police, and Panyaza Lesufi, the Premier of Gauteng along with General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), visited the Sporong informal settlement, on Wednesday.

The visit follows last week’s visit to find alternative accommodation for residents who were housed in a community hall, for close to a week.

SAPS said in a statement, night patrols will also be conducted by officers in collaboration with local community patrollers.
