At a time when residents are up in arms about interrupted water supply, Rand Water has clarified its role in the water sector.
In a statement on Thursday, the Water Board said that it abstracts raw water from the Vaal Dam as per the abstraction license issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation.
This water is then treated and pumped to reservoirs to supply municipalities, direct consumers, industries and mines.
Plants managed by the entity have a combined 5 000M/d, including Zuikerbosch and Vereeniging Water.
A newly constructed Station 5A treatment plant has a production capacity of 600 Ml/d.
This brings the combined limit of raw water abstraction to 1,803 million cubic meters per annum (4 936Ml/d).
About 210Ml/d of this amount, is pumped into Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station and ArcelorMittal.
Rand Water also buys drinking water from Magalies Water Board and supplies it to the Rustenburg Local Municipality.
“Rand Water supply capacity must be understood beyond the treatment capacity to include its pumping capacity.”
That is at 5 800Ml/d.
