The weather service (SAWS) urged motorists to be cautious on wet and slippery roads this weekend, into Monday.

Lehlohonolo Thobela and Tokela Chiloane, of the forecasting department at SAWS, advised against unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Visitors to beaches are also urged to stay away during rough seas.

The first of two cold fronts, landed on Friday evening, in the Western and Northern Cape.

It is expected to spread across the central and eastern areas of the country.

The weather service (SAWS) said cold, wet and windy conditions would spread to the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal.

Wave heights are expected to reach up to 5 meters on Sunday.

Day temperatures are expected to go up to 12 degrees, on Sunday, in the western interior.
