The project to reseal the access roads in Ngcanasini village, in Maqolweni, is expected to begin in July 2026.

This emerged at a meeting attended by Zolile Williams, MEC for the Department of Cooperative Development and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the Eastern Cape  on Friday.

Williams’ intervention comes after several community protests, demanding water service delivery in Mqanduli.

Various communities have been protesting since February, including those in New Rest, Maqomeni and Makhenkesi.

There is also a problem of sewer spillage in Makhenkesi, disrupting the schooling programme.

The Cogta also said in addition to pressure from the 2025 heavy rains, infrastructure is vandalised.

At least nine foreign persons were arrested in Umtata, for destroying and vandalising electricity transformers recently.
