Several water interruptions occurred this week as a result of a breakdown of the Ekulindeni Water Treatment Works.
In addition, there was a power failure at the Eerstehoek Water Treatment Works due to a damaged transformer.
This led to interrupted water supply to Wards 10, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, and 25, including areas in Nhlazatshe 1–7, Elukwatini A–C, Tjakastad, and Mooiplaas.
During the same week, David Mahlobo, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, visited the Gert Sibande District.
He was accompanied by Walter Mngomezulu, the Executive Mayor, and Snana Dhlamini, CALM Acting Executive Mayor, to visit the Empuluzi Water Treatment Works.
The Municipality said the delegation acknowledged that surrounding communities have been receiving water supply under challenging conditions.
Mahlobo also personally observed water leakages in the distribution network, and raised concern over the lack of a functional storage dam, describing it as a critical missing link for water security.
“It is not enough to treat and supply water if we are losing a significant portion through leakages and have no buffer storage to ensure continuity,” said Mahlobo.
The municipality committed to auditing the leakages and fast-tracking a resolution plan for the storage dam.
The Municipality also said the Nhlazatshe No. 6 Road Paving Project is now complete.
The Ward 2 (Mahoxo) road paving project is also progressing on schedule.
