The bridge on the R62 between Kareedouw and Joubertina, part of the Koukamma municipality in the Eastern Cape, collapsed on Wednesday.

The bridge has cut off communities in Misgund, Louterwater, Krakeel, Joubertina and surrounding farms.

The Kouga Municipality warned residents that the level of water at the Weston–Hankey Bridge has risen above the road surface, due to increased inflows and water releases associated with the Kouga Dam system.

As a result, the Municipality decided to temporarily close the R330 at both the Hankey and Weston access points until further notice.

No casualties were reported.
