This year’s South African Coal Ash Conference is well underway at Sasol Place.
The Coal Ash Association (SACAA) are the organisers of the event, attended by energy companies including Eskom Hld SOC Ltd, Mintek, tertiary and research institutions such as the University of the Witwatersrand and the North-West University (NWU).
Sasol said the conference is expected to unlock the full potential of coal ash.
Andy Msiza, Senior Vice President of Research and Technology, said “no single organisation is going to solve this on its own. We either build this ecosystem together, or we don’t build it at all.”
Msiza also said this will be accomplished through partnerships, innovation and a shared commitment to progress.
“Coal ash can contribute meaningfully to infrastructure development, circular economy outcomes and sustainable growth in South Africa.”
This is some 25 million tonnes of ash burnt annually, at power plants. It has hazardous pollutants like arsenic, lead, and mercury.
Experts say there are three types- fine fly ash (airborne), bottom ash (coarse), and boiler slag.
