The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will hold a meeting kickstarting a process to subpoena the Mayor of the OR Tambo District Municipality, on Tuesday this week.

This follows complaints about lack of access to clean and safe water across the district.

The SAHRC said it has monitored and engaged with residents, at various municipalities, including Flagstaff, Mqanduli, Ingquza Hill, Port St Johns and King Sabata Dalindyebo.

The Commission said the hearings on Tuesday, aim to “get explanations under oath, access the adequacy of planning, implementation and oversight mechanisms.”

Hearings will be heard from 10am, at the SAHRC Eastern Cape’s office- Chiselhurst, East London.
