Stakeholders at the 2026 Fuels Industry Imbizo, held in Sandton, concluded there is a need for an orderly, affordable, and inclusive energy transition.
Some discussions at the two day event, which began on Wednesday, included the looming July 2027 deadline for Clean Fuels II, LPG expansion and logistics security.
An initial outcome is the commitment of the sector to meet the July 1, 2027 deadline and work towards ambitious infrastructure upgrades, required to meet global standards.
They also spoke at length about South Africa’s reliance on imported refined petroleum and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Stakeholders also agreed there is a need to beef up security of tenure for coastal oil import infrastructure.
Speakers at the event included Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Barbara Creecy, the Minister of Transport, Bobby Ramagwede- the CEO of the Automobile Association of South Africa, Jane Akumu -Programme Officer at the UN Environment Programme.
