The Western Cape High Court ordered the Minister of Electricity and Energy and the Chief Director of the Department, to provide information pertaining to the Duynefontein nuclear project proposal, within 10 days.
This follows a hearing brought by SAFCEI and lawyers -Cullinan & Associates, on Thursday.
Environmental organisations affiliated to SAFCEI including Earthlife Africa Johannesburg and Greenpeace Africa, argue that the approval for this project is based on outdated environmental assessments that are nearly two decades old and fail to reflect current realities, including escalating climate risks, safety concerns, radioactive waste challenges, evacuation planning complexities and the rapid growth of renewable energy alternatives.
The proposed project is a 4,000 Megawatts (MW) Nuclear-1 at Duynefontein, near Koeberg.
SAFCEI said in a statement on Thursday, “we believe the Duynefontein proposal is a “zombie project” that continues to move forward despite dramatic changes in South Africa’s energy landscape, including the availability of safer, more affordable and sustainable renewable energy solutions.”
