One person died in a house fire in Montford, Chatsworth in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A second person was taken to hospital for treatment.
eThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services said initial reports about the fire were received at around 05h30am.
The Municipality said the fire was raging out of control upon the arrival of firefighters.
The ground and first floors of the double-storey residence were in flames and thick smoke and intense heat engulfed the house.
Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire in about 20 minutes.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Similarly, another house in Regents Park, Johannesburg, was also on fire.
The house has seven-rooms.
Johannesburg’s Emergency Services (EMS) crews responded to the fire after receiving a call.
The cause of that fire is also unknown and is now the subject of an investigation.
EMS in Johannesburg said “residents are urged to use heating devices safely. Keep heaters away from curtains, bedding and other flammable materials, never leave heaters unattended while switched on, and switch them off before going to sleep or leaving the house.”
