The tailings dam wall at Samancor Chrome’s Dikwena operation, collapsed on Thursday afternoon.
The dam is located at the mine’s facility near the town of Brits in the North West.
A flood of mining sludge spilled over to roads, vehicles, and power lines.
In addition to flowing to Eland Mine, managed by Northam Platinum, it also flowed into a nearby river.
Nearby communities were affected by a power outage.
