The death toll in the earthquake in Indonesia has climbed up to 53.

Over 5,000 people are still missing.

The 7,7 quake struck off the coast of Flores in eastern Indonesia, at around 21:58:23 UTC.

Ron Nechemia, President of the Global Bank Group, said he is deeply saddened by the devastating quake.

“On behalf of Global Bank, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and my sincere wishes for the recovery of those who have been injured” said Nechemia.

He also said the human consequences of the disaster extend far beyond the moment of impact, as families await news, survivors confront displacement, and communities face the loss of homes, essential services, and security.

“This disaster demonstrates how rapidly an earthquake can become a wider humanitarian, infrastructure, economic, and development crisis. When buildings collapse while access routes, communications, and essential services are simultaneously disrupted, each failure intensifies the others, rescuers face greater difficulty reaching survivors, medical assistance is delayed, and human and economic losses deepen” he said.
