A plane crashed at the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road (R101) in Glen Austin, Midrand.
Minutes later, another accident occurred at the same location, resulting in severe traffic disruptions and heavy delays on the roadway.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and Emergency Management Services (EMS) are on site.
Authorities are still to confirm the number of injuries or casualties resulting from the incidents.
Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid the area.
JMPD said alternative routes are the N1 Highway, Arterial Diversions: Route via Olifantsfontein Road (northbound) or Allandale Road (southbound) to bypass the Glen Austin perimeter and Lever Road or Dale Road.
