The Municipal Disaster Response Grant (MDRG) transferred R26 million, to five municipalities in the Garden Route.
The funds are actually from the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) and the National Disaster Rehabilitation Grant, to repair critical services infrastructure in the area, ravaged by storms, back in May this year.
Gerhard Otto, Head of Disaster Management, at the District Municipality, said “Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Bitou and George will receive R5 million each, while Kannaland would be receiving R6 million.”
The funding must be spent within six months on repairing damaged areas.
Otto also said basic services will be prioritized, including repairs related to water and sanitation works.
He further elaborated that this emergency fund originates from a nationally allocated R213,4 million, which was released to three provinces as a practical intervention to address damages sustained during the May 2026 floods.
