Police suspect a man found with severe burnt wounds at a nearby healthcare facility, might be linked to the latest fire at the Central Substation, in Johannesburg.
The fire is believed to have begun around 04:00am on Saturday morning, and resulted in another electricity outage in Marshalltown and surrounding areas.
Themba Jaca, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) activated a search at nearby healthcare facilities.
The man in question was found at Hillbrow Clinic, where he was reportedly admitted at approximately 04:10 on Saturday morning.
He was later transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
The individual is currently under police guard.
City Power said on Saturday that its technicians would wait for smoke to subside before assessing the extent of the damage.
Charles Tlouane, City Power’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, said “we welcome the arrest of the suspect, whom we believe may be linked to the spate of vandalism and cable theft incidents in the Inner City. We strongly believe that the criminal activities targeting our underground electricity infrastructure may involve more than one person, possibly an organised syndicate. We have already requested the intervention of the Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner to assist with increased patrols and the protection of our key electricity networks. We want everyone involved in these activities brought to book.”
