An estimated 645 million people faced hunger last year, while about 2.7 billion, people cannot afford a healthy diet.
This is according to Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations.
Guterres said food is a basic human right, but shocks and crises are adding to hunger and poverty, by disrupting production and supply chains.
In addition, they are ramping up the cost of food and fertilizer.
This, he said, is “putting nutritious diets further out of reach for millions.”
This year’s theme for World Food Day is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”
Researchers are hoping to use data, innovation, and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to ensure everyone can access nutritious food.
