Protesters have closed major routes, including the N2 around Qumbu and others affecting Port St Johns.

They burnt tyres and dumped heaps of sand onto the roads.

The O.R. Tambo District Municipality said it  is aware of the protest but urged aggrieved people to respect the right to peaceful protest.

“Please do not destroy infrastructure or block the movement of people and essential services. Behind every blocked road could be an ambulance racing to save a life, a worker trying to earn a living, a learner trying to reach school, or a water and sanitation team responding to a community in need” said the Municipality, in an update.

Qumbu Village SSS expressed horror and shock at residents who entered school premises and removed learners whilst preparing for the Final Examination, expected to start on Tuesday.

“This disruption has caused fear and anxiety amongst our learners, especially our Grade 12 class of 2026. We appeal to our community that they must not disturb our learners” said the school on social media platforms.

The school further urged learners to report for school on Tuesday, in full uniform.
